Police search off Narrawallee Beach after abandoned spearfishing gear found

Police are searching a south coast beach after spearfishing equipment was found in water about 150 metres off the coast.

An air and sea search is underway for a spearfisher after a Go-Pro, fish bag and Crocs were found 150m metres off the south coast.

In a statement, police said they had not received any missing persons reports in relation to the incident.

Last night, police searched the beach and nearby land for other items but nothing was found.

The equipment was found by a fisherman who saw the bundle of items, which included a green Typhoon rail gun and spear, Go-Pro camera, LED torch, Ocean Hunter black fish bag and blue and red Croc-style shoes, in the water 150m off Narrawallee Beach, Headland on Tuesday.

They were all tied together.

South Coast Police District were told the items were found around 3pm.

“Police have reviewed images on the camera’s SD card and believe the owner of the gear may be a man of Asian appearance, about 20-30 years-old,” Marine Area Command said in a statement.

The search comes almost a year after Australian winter Olympian Alex “Chumpy” Pullin was found dead after spearfishing on the Gold Coast.

The champion snowboarder suffered a shallow water blackout at Palm Beach around 10.30am on July 8.

Queensland police said at the time Pullin was found unresponsive on the ocean floor at an artificial reef by a snorkeller.

Pullin was a seasoned freediver and regularly went spearfishing

Pullin represented Australia at three Winter Olympics and was the team’s flag-bearer at the Sochi Games in Russia in 2014.

He was a two-time snowboarding world champion.
