Police have released images of a man they believe could assist with inquiries into an alleged sexual act committed on a Sydney train earlier this month.

Officers launched an investigation on Saturday, May 3, following reports that a man was seen performing a sexual act toward a woman on a train travelling from Town Hall to Waterfall shortly before 12pm.

The 45-year-old woman reported the incident to railway staff after arriving at Waterfall Station, where the man left the train.

Police were called shortly after and began investigating the incident.

As part of ongoing inquiries, investigators have released CCTV images of a man they believe may be able to assist with the case.

He is described as being of caucasian appearance, approximately 165 to 175cm tall, and was last seen wearing a white shirt, grey track pants, black sneakers and a black cap.

Anyone who recognises the man or has information that might assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
