A man is dead after sustaining severe chest injuries when two yachts collided in Sydney Harbour on Friday afternoon.

NSW Police and Ambulance told The Daily Telegraph first responders were called to Rushcutters Bay following reports of an incident involving the collision of two boats in Watsons Bay, confirming a man had “died at the scene”.

“About 6:30pm today (Friday 6 December 2024), emergency services were called to New Beach Rd, Darling Point, following reports of two boats had collided,” the spokesman said.

“On arrival, officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command, along with the Marine Area Command found a man, believed to be aged in his 50’s, had sustained a severe chest injury and died at the scene.

“Both skippers will be subject to mandatory testing and both vessels have been seized for mechanical examination.”

A member of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia told media the crash was believed to have involved two yachts in a race off Sydney headlands.

Investigations into the incident have commenced.
