Four inmates have been charged after climbing onto the roof of a Sydney prison during a riot this week.

On Monday afternoon, 14 inmates climbed onto the roof of the accommodation wing at Parklea Correctional Centre in Sydney’s west.

Inmates also allegedly lit fires within the wing and dozens of prisoners refused to take directions from guards in the yards.

It took about three hours for the Corrective Services Security Operation Group to bring the demonstration to an end at the privately-run jail.

On Friday afternoon, detectives arrested four inmates, Peter Johnson, 20, Jirra Murphy, 23, Brandon Shillingworth, 22, and Jacob Trindall, 22, at Riverstone Police Station.

They were charged with riot and appeared before Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

The cases were adjourned to Blacktown Local Court on July 19.

At the time, Parklea Correctional Centre Governor Paul Baker said staff used “chemical mutations” to clear the yards.

“The incident was resolved by officers who were highly trained to manage such incidents,” he said.

“The officers have done an excellent job, using their specialised training, to resolve this situation safely.

“I commend the teams from the Security Operations Group and Parklea’s Immediate Response Team for their skilful handling of this situation.”
