The son of an inner-city police area commander charged over an alleged assault in Sydney’s inner west is now also set to face court over the incident.
Kings Cross police area commander Superintendent Jonathan Beard, 55, was charged with three counts of assault causing actual bodily harm after an alleged incident at Stanmore in September.
The high-ranking cop has pleaded not guilty to all three charges and his employment is under review as the NSW Police Professional Standards Command investigates under Strike Force Swanage.
The Daily Telegraph can now reveal Supt Beard’s son Oscar, 18, has also been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm over the same incident and is due to face Downing Centre Local Court for the first time on January 16.
An earlier statement from NSW Police confirmed a second man had been charged on November 21.
“Following an incident at Stanmore on September 21 involving a 55-year-old off-duty police officer, the Professional Standards Command established Strike Force Swanage to investigate an alleged assault,” the statement read.
“On November 21, following inquiries, a second man – aged 18 – was given a court attendance to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court on January 16.”
A LinkedIn page for Oscar indicates he is a law and philosophy student at the University of Notre Dame Australia and works as a bartender at hospitality group Pacific Concepts, which owns El Camino, The Bavarian, Winghaus, Munich Brauhaus, and The Argyle.
Sources previously alleged Supt Beard approached three males who were knocking on doors in his street about 10pm on September 21.
In October, Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver said three men were arrested and charged with assault and trespassing over the incident. He said two of the three men, aged 18 and 21, suffered injuries including cuts and bruises, while one sustained a shoulder injury.
Last week, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb’s office took the extraordinary step of asking the court to require that parties be made to ask permission before they could view documents in the case of Supt Beard. A representative for Ms Webb’s office indicated they would seek to prevent any person accessing Beard’s court file without first notifying the commissioner.
A magistrate will have to make a final determination on the order request in January.
