Olympic shooting champ Michael Diamond has lost his latest bid to get back his gun licence because of his history of domestic violence and drink driving and other driving offences.
In a decision that will rock plans the two-time Olympic gold medal winner has for returning to international competition, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled it is not in the interests of public safety for him to be granted a firearms licence.
The tribunal said police had been called to domestic incidents 12 times between 2003 - when he won his second Olympic gold medal for trap at the Sydney Olympics - and 2021 involving Diamond, former partners and his late brother.
Diamond, 50, has lost his appeal against a decision by NSW Police to refuse his application for a gun licence to use and possess long arms as a member of a target shooting club.
The tribunal said it had to make a decision based not on Diamond’s past success in his 29-year professional shooting career, but on his domestic history, traffic records and firearms-related offences.
“When that is done there are serious concerns for the public safety sufficient to affirm the decision to refuse (him) a licence,” the tribunal said.
“Until such time as the Applicant has taken steps to deal with his ability to behave more appropriately when confronted with a frustrating circumstance, he should not be allowed to hold a firearms licence.”
Diamond is due in Toronto Local Court next month for “special category driver drive with special range PCA” and driving while suspended.
