Two brothers from one of Sydney’s most infamous underworld families have had police step in and take out an AVO between them, before one of the men was allegedly caught in possession of two guns.
Walid “Wally” Assaad was arrested in a 5am raid on his home on Wednesday and charged with acquiring a gun while subject to a firearms prohibition order (FPO) and firearm found at premises while subject to an FPO.
In a statement, NSW Police said they carried out an FPO compliance check at Assaad’s home late Tuesday night, before returning several hours later to arrest him.
“About 11pm (on) Tuesday, March 7 2023, officers from Bankstown Police Area Command executed a Firearms Prohibition Order at a home on Sturt Ave in Georges Hall,” a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
“During the search, officers located two pistols, which were seized and will undergo forensic examination.
“The resident – a 33-year-old man – was arrested about 5am on Wednesday and taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was charged.”
Unrelated to the alleged discovery of the two weapons, NSW Police also took out an AVO against Walid for the protection of his brother Tarek.
The AVO between the two Assaads comes more than six years after their brother Hamad “The Executioner” Assaad was assassinated.
Hamad, then 29, was gunned down in the driveway of his Georges Hall home in October 2016.
The two men who are widely believed to have been the shooters in Hamad’s death, Kemel “Blackie” Barakat and Mejid Hamzy, have themselves both been assassinated.
Police believe Hamad was potentially involved in multiple murders, including the shooting death of Walid “Wally” Ahmad at Bankstown Centro Shopping Centre in 2016.
He was previously acquitted at trial of the 2007 murder of Mohamad Alahmad.
Hamad had the word “executioner” tattooed across his neck and on his right chest the phrase: “The souls I have taken will not haunt me … only the ones I haven’t will”.
A year later Tarek Assaad was shot in the shoulder and arm outside his Condell Park home, but survived.
The Assaads have continued to make headlines over the years, with Walid last year being kidnapped by two masked intruders who were armed with weapons as he talked live on TikTok with Nomads bikie turned social media star, Moudi Tajjour.
NSW Police are continuing to investigate that incident.
Walid faced Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded not guilty to both firearms charges, but was refused bail by Magistrate Shane McAnulty.
He is next due to appear back in court on May 9.
