With a door hanging open as a stolen car speeds along one of Sydney’s busiest motorways, a group of youths allegedly hurl items at pursuing police, forcing them to pull back.
But the PolAir helicopter continues to track the white Mazda CX3, which had been reported stolen from a home in Victoria, as it travels right across the city, culminating in the arrests of three teenagers and a 12-year-old girl in the eastern suburbs.
NSW Police on Thursday released snippets of aerial footage from 50 minutes of madness, which began with officers attempting to stop the stolen car on the Hume Highway at Edmondson Park, in Sydney’s southwest, about 10.30am.
When the driver failed to stop, a pursuit began, stretching along the M5 before being called off for safety reasons.
PolAir tracked the vehicle to Milperra, where the chase resumed before being terminated again when items were launched at them.
With the chopper still monitoring its movements, the Mazda continued east through local streets in Alexandria, Zetland, Centennial Park, Randwick and ultimately Bondi Junction, where it was abandoned in a bus interchange about 11.20am.
Police said two 14-year-old boys and two girls, aged 12 and 17, fled on foot but were arrested on the Bondi Junction train platform after being spotted by plain-clothes officers.
Two probationary constables on their first day were also involved in the arrests.
The children were taken to Surry Hills Police Station, where the 17-year-old girl was charged with two counts of not stopping and driving dangerously in a police pursuit.
She was also hit with single charges of exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, driving without ever having held a licence, possessing suspected stolen goods, receiving stolen property outside NSW and being carried in a stolen vehicle.
The other three children were all charged with being carried in a stolen vehicle.
They were all refused bail to face a children’s court on Friday.
It will be alleged the group travelled from Melbourne overnight before arriving in Sydney early on Thursday morning.
NSW detectives are now working with Victoria Police to determine how the four youths know each other.
Addressing the media on Thursday afternoon, Detective Inspector Adam Solah described the quartet’s alleged actions as “extremely dangerous” and “very concerning”.
“It’s very concerning, the behaviour of young people who think (allegedly) stealing a car is effectively a joke is what they’re making of it,’’ he said.
“We don’t treat it as such.”
