Police have flagged a knife crackdown after a spate of overnight stabbings in Western Sydney left five people in hospital — one of whom remains in a critical condition.

The incidents have prompted senior police to warn they would be “actively targeting people carrying knives in the community”.

“Last night was a sad example of what can occur if people carry knives - we have alcohol we have drugs involved, people make some poor choices, and the end results are people end up in hospital, and others end up before the courts,” Superintendent Stephen Eggington

The first incident occurred about 11.15pm Saturday in Northmead. Emergency services were called to a home on Hammer Rd and found a 19-year-old man with a stab wound to the abdomen.

He was treated by paramedics and than to Westmead in a stable condition, while police established a crime scene at the house to investigate the incident.

At 12.45am Sunday, police were called to Waikanda Cres in Whalan and found a 25-year-old man suffering numerous stab wounds to his torso.

Police were told me was involved in a fight with a group of people after a party at a nearby house.

A glass bottle that was found at the scene was taken for forensic examination to see if it was the weapon used.

The man was treated by paramedics and taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Just after 2am, emergency services responded to a separate incident in Whalan.

They attended a home on Moresby Cres and discovered a 20-year-old man with a stab wound to his forearm.

Police were told the man was stabbed during a fight nearby before returning home. He was taken to Westmead Hospital for surgery but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Detectives have begun an investigation into both incidents but have not yet determined if they are linked.

At 1.15am Sunday, police and paramedics were called to an intersection at Doonside, where a teenager was reportedly injured.

At the corner of Kildare Rd and Myall St, they found a 15-year-old boy with stab wounds to his abdomen and arm.

Police were told he was injured after an argument with another boy he knew, who allegedly produced a knife.

The injured teen was treated by paramedics and taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition.

A knife was recovered from a nearby drain and an 18-year-old was arrested nearby and taken to Blacktown Police Station.

He was charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court later on Sunday.

About 2.40am, emergency services also attended to a 49-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to the arm who turned up at Cabramatta Police Station.

Police have been told he was injured during a home invasion at a unit on John St.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene has been established at the unit and detectives from Fairfield City Police Area Command have begun an investigation.

Superintendent Stephen Egginton appealed for information after the separate attacks, saying “Police are out there actively targeting people carrying knives in the community.”

Superintendent Eggleton assured the public there had not been a rise in knife-related crime and rates remain steady.

“It could have been much, much worse, there are active investigations going on for all the matters at the moment,” he said.

“We’re obviously working with the victims, and we’re really appealing to the community to come out and provide us with some information — if anyone’s seen anything at the locations of any of these stabbings last night, we really need them to come forward and give us a hand.”

Anyone with information on any of these incidents should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
