A truck driver in Moree escaped injury after an apparent gunshot struck his vehicle over the weekend.
The driver, a 42-year-old man, was passing near the intersection of Edward St and Jones Ave just after 12.30pm on Saturday when he heard a loud noise.
Stopping soon after, he discovered a small indent in his vehicle and contacted police.
New England Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
“Inquiries are ongoing,” a police statement said.
A warning from the Moree Street Wise Community Watch Facebook page cautioned locals about the escalating danger.
“Everyone stay the f**k away from the Moree Frome St Bypass way around town! Locals are going rogue shooting at tippers,” the post warned.
“If he was empty it would have went through.”
The page also highlighted another serious incident in which a group allegedly forced a truck driver to stop, surrounded the vehicle, and robbed him.
“And another driver got stopped and ran sacked! The group of them surrounded the driver til he stopped the truck and they robbed him.”
The post quickly drew a flood of reactions from frustrated locals, with many expressing anger over the escalating situation in Moree.
“Wow, giving Alice Springs a bit of a challenge for places not to visit,” one user said.
Another added, “So sad for Moree, some of the local youth are out of control unfortunately.”
Others called for stronger action.
“For goodness sake, this is not a joke—time we had some decent intervention to stop this,” one user vented.
Amid the outrage, a few commenters questioned the accuracy of the claims.
“Is this true?” one person asked, while another wrote, “Source.”
The post on social media claimed police are directing drivers to avoid the bypass and opt for alternate routes around the racecourse. Police did not confirm or deny.
