A father was forced to make a citizen’s arrest after allegedly catching a naked elderly man filming young children in a local swimming pool shower.
Micke Hoong, 56, was visiting Cabravale Leisure Centre in Cabramatta last Friday with three young relatives when he noticed a 75-year-old man allegedly pleasuring himself while filming people who were showering naked in the cubicles.
“I felt something was wrong, because normally when you shower after the swimming pool, you take five minutes and you go, right?” said Mr Hoong.
“But after five minutes, and he went out, and then he returned with a camera, then back to the wash basin from where he took pictures,” he said.
“And then he came back to the shower, that’s how I noticed him, it was weird,” he said.
Mr Hoong, a doctor of Chinese medicine, said his family felt unsafe and staff initially ignored his repeated pleas to arrest the man.
He said the youngsters had been in tears since and the eldest, 18, had developed anger issues after the incident involving the naked man.
“I’m furious, if he wasn’t old I would have punched him on the spot, the children were shocked, I had to get them out of the showers and dressed quickly and then went after him,” said Mr Hoong.
“I wasn’t sure at the beginning what he was doing with his phone but while I was changing the children on a bench, I turned round, I felt something was wrong, and saw him holding the phone again.
“I shouted at him ‘Why are you taking a picture?”
“He panicked and tried to get away but he couldn’t run, he was naked and I had taken his phone.”
Mr Hoong claims he was forced to detain the man and block any escape by cornering him with his body in the changing room.
“I blocked his path with my body and cornered him in the changing room and called for help. I asked the lifeguard to call police five times but he didn’t,” he said.
“I felt the centre did not take what happened seriously. The managers later told me the man was a regular at the leisure centre.”
Mr Hoong, who runs a rejuvenation clinic in Olympic Park, has complained to the leisure centre managers over the slow response and lack of immediate police assistance.
Police officers arrived within five minutes and arrested the man who was taken for questioning at Fairfield Police station at 4.45pm.
Chi Yeung, 76, was refused bail and charged with six separate offences, including two counts of “aggravated carry out sexual acts with another”.
He was also charged with one count of “film person’s private parts without consent aggravated”, one charge of “film person’s private parts without consent”, one charge of “produce child abuse material”, and one charge of “disseminate child abuse material”.
“I’m very angry over what happened and my wife is mad, too,” Mr Hoong said.
NSW Police said it will be alleged a man approached two children in the changing rooms at a leisure centre on Broomfield St, Cabravale.
“Police will allege the man performed a sexual act before taking a number of photos, “ a spokesman said.
“Witnesses confronted the man, before contacting emergency services.
“Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command attended and arrested the 75-year-old man.
“He was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with six offences.”
Yeung is due to appear at Fairfield Local Court on January 8.
