Brother of man charged over Alen Moradian killing shot dead

The younger brother of a man charged with allegedly killing drug kingpin Alen Moradian has been shot dead in an early morning attack in Sydney’s west.

A mother watched as her son was executed on the front lawn of the family home in Sydney’s southwest, leaving police to investigate if it is a “retaliation” attack in the city’s ongoing gang war.

Bol Deng, 20, was about to get into the car with his waiting mother when a masked gunman ran up and fired up to five shots, killing him outside his Stella St home in Fairfield Heights about 8.30am on Tuesday.

Witnesses told of hearing gunshots, followed seconds later by the guttural screams of his mother just metres away.

Police are investigating whether Deng’s death is in anyway linked to his older brother Dut Deng allegedly being responsible for the murder of Alen Moradian at Bondi Junction last June – arguably the biggest hit of Sydney’s ongoing underworld war.

The young man’s murder comes as NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb faces intense criticism over her leadership as the state’s top cop, with questions raised over her handling of the alleged double murder of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies by one of her own officers.

When approached by The Daily Telegraph for questions about the more than 21 organised crime-related murders that have occurred in Sydney since 2020, Commissioner Webb refused to comment.

NSW Police Fairfield City Superintendent Michael McLean said the nature of the shooting meant investigators were treating it as “targeted”.

“We are satisfied this appears to be a targeted shooting,” Supt McLean said.

“A dark coloured sedan approached the premises from an inner-westerly direction where the shooting occurred and the vehicle drove off.

“The 20-year-old is known to us and believed to have resided at these premises.”

On top of the shooting happening in front of Deng’s mother, a number of other members of the young man’s family were in the vicinity of the home at the time he was killed.

A distressed woman, understood to be Deng’s mother, was seen wrapped in a white towel and sitting on a concrete footpath outside the property with her head in her hands, shortly after the brazen attack.

She sobbed on the ground as she was consoled by two other horrified family members and questioned by police.

Another woman – who also appeared to be a close relative of Deng – was seen screaming and crying at home on Throsby street around the corner from the crime scene.

She was then escorted into a car by a young man in a red shirt and comforted by a number of other relatives who ran around nearby streets before packing into multiple cars and driving away from the crime scene.

At one point angry family members lashed out at media.

Neighbours on the quiet suburban street told how after hearing the gunshots, they looked out their windows to see scared young schoolchildren running for their lives.

“There was a lady screaming hysterically and a Sudanese guy with no shirt on who came running down the road,” a local resident told The Daily Telegraph.

Over five hours after the shooting, a burnt out dark grey Toyota Camry was later located just over three kilometres away on Hunt St in Guildford West.

A swarm of NSW Police detectives and fire and rescue crews were called to the scene where the car went up in flames, with a jerry can dumped on the road next to the vehicle.

On Tuesday evening, police said they did not believe the car fire was linked to the Fairfield Heights shooting that occurred just over seven minutes away, however investigations are ongoing.

Nearby resident Rohulla Rahimi was asleep when the vehicle exploded outside his home.

“I was asleep and my mum came and woke me up and said the car was on fire,” he said.

“I came out and saw it and called triple-0. My wife and kids are scared. We can’t live in this house anymore. I’ve got kids.”

It is not known whether the tragic news of his brother’s passing has been relayed to Deng, who has been behind bars on remand since early January.

Police allege Deng was wearing a hood and balaclava when he shot dead Alen Moradian in the underground carpark of the apartment block he was using as a safehouse last year.

Moradian’s death was one of the biggest underworld hits Sydney has ever seen and is detailed in depth in The Daily Telegraph’s award-winning mini docu-series The War II: Kill or be Killed.
