The pizza shop owner fatally stabbed in Sydney’s west has been identified as Sonmez Alagoz.
Mr Alagoz, who had owned The Pizza Stop in Kingswood for the past 14 years, was found outside his shop with a single stab wound to his chest about 10pm on Tuesday.
The 58-year-old man was rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition, where he died from his injuries shortly after 12.30am on Wednesday.
Nepean Police Area Commander Detective Superintendent Trent King told media outside St Marys Police Station on Wednesday six teenagers, aged between 14 and 19, were in custody and being treated as persons of interest. There were three boys, a man and two girls among them.
A 15-year-old boy was subsequently also arrested at St Mary’s Police Station, taking the number of teenagers in custody to seven.
No charges have been laid.
Dete Supt King said the teenagers were located around the Kingswood area shortly after the man was found, but could not confirm if the alleged weapon had been found.
He said early investigations established the teenagers were not dining at the vicinity prior to the alleged stabbing, but it was too early to say what had happened prior to the incident and police were exploring a number of lines of inquiry.
“This was a man who was going about running his business within the local area, and certainly didn’t deserve what occurred,” he said.
“This was a gentleman who has suffered a gruesome injury and required immediate assistance, which unfortunately was unsuccessful in the end.”
The group of teenagers were known to police.
Det Supt King said the man had owned his business for more than 14 years and had been a member of the Penrith community for more than 50.
Strike Force Narrira has been set up to investigate the death, with the assistance of the NSW Police homicide squad.
“At this stage I would ask any person who has information or CCTV or dashcam footage that may assist with the investigation to contact St Marys Police or CrimeStoppers,” Det Supt King said.
