Man dead, woman under police guard after Bankstown stabbing

Two children called 000 after their mum allegedly took prescription pills before a “domestic-related” incident left their father dead in their Bankstown unit, police allege.

Australia's worrying murder trend

A woman accused of murdering a former partner who was at her house in contravention of an apprehended violence order for her protection will be subject to a mental health assessment as she is remanded in prison.

Thi Bich Huynh, 37, did not appear on screen at Bankstown Local Court for her first appearance since she was charged with murder on Monday.

Police will allege Huynh stabbed her ex-partner, 49-year-old Quoc Dung Bui, in frenzied scenes at her Bankstown unit at 6am on Sunday.

Mr Bui was forbidden from being within 100m of Huynh’s home after he was charged with domestic violence offences in December, which were to be heard at Bankstown Local Court in July.

A solicitor for Huynh said she would not apply for bail and it was formally refused by Magistrate Glenn Walsh, who also endorsed a warrant for a mental health assessment for Huynh.

Huynh’s case will return to court on May 25.

DEAD MAN DUE TO FACE COURT IN JULY

A man was stabbed to death in a suspected domestic incident in Bankstown, possibly in front of two children, after he apparently breached an AVO order.

A woman, 37, was charged with his murder yesterday after she was released from Bankstown Hospital about midday. The woman was taken to hospital from the scene on Sunday after taking pills some time before the stabbing took place.

The 49-year-old man’s body was found inside a Bankstown flat with stab wounds to the neck after the children rang triple-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the man had been charged in December last year with domestic violence-related offences.

Those charges were due to be heard in court in July, and the man had an AVO against him forbidding him from being within 100 metres of the unit prior to the incident on Sunday.

Bankstown Police Area Command crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Darren Sly said the woman was said to have taken prescription pills sometime earlier before the alleged “domestic-related” incident.

He said police found a knife nearby.

Two boys aged 10 and 16 were also at the unit, one of whom made the call to emergency services.

“We believe the incident is domestic-related … it’s still early in the investigation. But we believe the woman may have taken some pills or prescription medicine,” Detective Chief Inspector Sly said.

“Emergency services arriving found two children, boys aged 10 and 16.

“We understand one of the children called triple-0.”

Investigators were at the crime scene on Rickard Rd yesterday.

Detective Chief Inspector Sly said the two boys were now in the care of family, and investigations into the altercation would continue.

“While we understand the two children were present, it’s too early in the investigation to establish exactly what they heard or might have seen,” he said.

“The children have been taken into the care of a family member at this stage … this would be certainly traumatic for them and we will certainly try and help them work through something like this.”

Neighbours inside the apartment complex spoke of their shock at the incident so close to their homes.

One resident, Pisan Kar, called the events “very frightening”.

Mr Kar has lived in the unit block for two years and said he now feared for the safety of his wife and young children.

“I was at work all day (on Sunday) and then came back at 3pm and there were police everywhere,” Mr Kar said.

“I don’t know my neighbours at all but it is very scary. My wife and children are here and it makes me worried.”

The 37-year-old woman was refused bail on Monday to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday.
