A 49-year-old man has been charged after allegedly launching an unprovoked attack on a 74-year-old stranger inside a Balmain apartment complex.

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting an elderly stranger inside the basement of a Balmain unit complex.
Emergency services were called to the Darling St address shortly before 10am on Wednesday, following reports of an assault.
Police were told a 74-year-old supermarket worker was allegedly set upon by a stranger while on shift collecting trolleys.
Several members of the public intervened and locked the younger man in a storage room until the arrival of police.
The elderly victim suffered injuries to his face, nose and eyes, and was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.
A 49-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Newtown Police Station.
He was charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common assault.
The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Thursday.
