Man charged with armed robbery of Hamilton chemist after dramatic arrest on Hunter Street at Newcastle West

A man has faced court after being dramatically arrested at one of Newcastle’s busiest intersections over the armed robbery of a Hamilton pharmacy.
Police swooped on the Bradley James Carney as he allegedly attempted to flee on Hunter Street, near the intersection with Steel Street, late on Wednesday afternoon.
They had been searching for the him since staff at the Beaumont Street pharmacy were allegedly threatened with a knife and robbed of dangerous drugs, including Oxycontin and Fentanyl, on Tuesday.
No one was injured in the alleged daytime robbery.
Carney, 40, was taken to Newcastle police station and charged with armed robbery, break and enter, trespass and resist arrest.
The break and enter charged relates to an alleged burglary at Cooks Hill on Monday.
Carney faced Newcastle Local Court on Thursday where he was did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
He will reappear in Newcastle Local Court on April 5.
