The night before an infamous Lone Wolf bikie was murdered his killers allegedly lay in wait in the same underground car park ready to strike, but had to abort at the last moment when his wife got out of the car alone.
Almost exactly 24 hours later on Monday June 27, 2022, the gunmen would allegedly return and shoot dead Yusuf Nazlioglu as he drove his Mercedes into the basement of his apartment block at Rhodes, in southwest Sydney – with his wife Jade right by his side.
Sources said that a night earlier, CCTV allegedly captured the gunmen getting out of their car and moving towards what they thought was Nazlioglu, before rushing away when they saw his blonde wife get out of the driver’s seat.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal the incredible allegations about Nazlioglu’s killer’s double take, and just how close his wife came to being another innocent victim of Sydney’s gang war, after a man was charged with allegedly being involved in his murder on Wednesday.
Mohammed Hosni Khaled, 25, was charged with murder over his alleged role in planning and co-ordinating the killing of Nazlioglu, including allegedly burning out getaway cars and then escaping on an e-scooter.
Police do not allege Khaled was the shooter who fired the fatal shots that killed Nazlioglu.
But it can be revealed that just two months ago on February 22, 2023, Khaled was charged with acquiring a pistol while subject to a firearms prohibition order (FPO).
That charge relates to a weapon found in search warrant carried out last November. There is no suggestion it is related to Nazlioglu’s death in any way.
Khaled was arrested at his home in Blair Athol at 6am on Wednesday before he was taken to Campbelltown Police Station and charged with one count of murder.
Homicide Squad boss Danny Doherty said police will allege Khaled carried out surveillance before the hit on Nazlioglu, and then was involved in setting multiple of the Volkswagen, Mercedes and Range Rover used in the murder alight afterwards.
“What police will allege is the accused acted with others to co-ordinate and plan the murder through use of many people doing different parts,” Detective Superintendent Doherty said.
“(This) included both surveillance and a reccy, if you like, in relation to the movements of the target. There were three stolen vehicles that were used during this murder — there were two e-scooters that were also used.
“We will allege in the weeks leading up to the murder the accused assisted in surveillance of the target, co-ordinated vehicles, did other activities on the day of the murder and the day after the murder, including burning out one of the vehicles that was used.
“It will be alleged that an e-scooter was then used by the accused with another person to leave the area where the last vehicle was set alight in the southwest Sydney area.”
Both the murder of Nazlioglu and alleged near-miss a night earlier are understood to have been captured on CCTV.
At the same time officers were arresting Khaled on Wednesday, detectives attached to Strike Force Claypinch and Taskforce Erebus executed two further search warrants at homes in Mt Pritchard and Kemps Creek.
Cannabis, cash, electronic devices, and other items relevant to the investigations were allegedly seized during the search warrants and will undergo further forensic examination.
Two further search warrants were carried out on Wednesday afternoon in relation to the investigation.
Nazlioglu was one of two men found not guilty of the murder of former high-profile Comanchero bikie boss Mick Hawi in 2018.
In the aftermath of Nazlioglu’s death, a co-accused revealed he failed to tell police key details that may have led to his conviction.
Nazlioglu was involved in several incidents in the weeks leading up to his death, it was later revealed.
He was also involved in a confrontation with Mick Hawi’s mother at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney’s west, while he was visiting a friend’s plot and Hawi’s mother visiting her son.
Police and underworld sources confirmed the incident between Nazlioglu and Hawi’s mother.
The Daily Telegraph is in no way suggesting Mrs Hawi or any of Hawi’s relatives had any involvement in the shooting of Nazlioglu.
There was also another incident in which Nazlioglu was behind the brazen extortion and theft of a number of luxury cars, including a Bentley, from a member of a well-known Sydney crime family.
“I won’t comment on the motive because it’s now before the court, but we’ve got an open mind about the cause and what motive was used,” Det Supt Doherty said.
“However we do know that Yusuf Nazlioglu had been previously linked to the Lone Wolf OMCG and had other conflict with other groups and organised crime syndicates.
“So we can’t rule out a number of motives and a number of theories.
Nazlioglu is one of 16 people to be killed in gangland related shootings on Sydney’s streets since late-2020.
