A dramatic car chase has ended with police arresting a 37-year-old man on a rooftop after he allegedly crashed into a cop car in the Southern Highlands before leading officers on a wild pursuit in Sydney’s southwest.

The incident began when highway patrol officers attempted to stop the driver of a black Mazda hatchback, which they believed had been involved in an earlier crash with a police car on Roscoe St, Mittagong.

However, a pursuit ensued after the man allegedly failed to stop on Narellan Rd, in Blair Athol, about 10.30am.

Police deployed a large number of units, including the PolAir helicopter, as the driver continued towards Gregory Hills Dr in the suburb of the same name.

The 37-year-old man then allegedly got out and fled on foot into the surrounding quiet suburbia.

Residents posted on social media saying the man had jumped fences into multiple backyards in an attempt to escape from police.

“He was jumping between roofs apparently, jumped down and ran through our garden and other neighbours,” Goran Jovicic said on Facebook.

The man then allegedly climbed onto a rooftop of a home on Kavanagh St, Gregory Hills, where he was sighted by PolAir and ultimately caught.

The 37-year-old was arrested and taken to Narellan Police Station, where he is assisting with officers’ inquiries on Thursday afternoon.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
