CCTV captures moment cops open fire during wild Sydney pursuit

WATCH: Incredible video captures moment police open fire during wild Western Sydney car chase.

Moment police fire multiple shots during pursuit

More than 20 shots were unleashed on a car by police which allegedly dragged a Raptor Squad officer along the ground in Sydney’s west, before the two young men onboard led them on a wild two hour pursuit.

Incredible CCTV from a home in Winston Hills captured audio of officers firing a barrage of bullets towards the black Holden Commodore, being driven by a 21-year-old man and containing a 21-year-old passenger.

Officers had opened fire after one of their colleagues grabbed the car as it slowed down, before speeding up and taking off again.

The footage, captured by a camera at the front of a home just after 10am, shows the Holden speeding away from three marked, and four unmarked, police vehicles.

Just over 30 minutes later the car returns to the same street and the same camera captures the loud bangs of more than 20 rounds being fired at the vehicle.

The shots came around midway through the chase, and left two bullet holes in the windscreen.

Three officers were taken to hospital following the chase, one with a shoulder injury and two with minor injuries.

Acting Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said the two men arrested were known to police.

He said they would face serious charges due to the nature of the driving and the injuries to police.

“We will investigate two things, one the criminal offences and also the actions of our officers,” A/Asst Comm Waddell said.

“I think police have done some very good work… we eventually arrested those two persons without any injury to any (civilians), so it’s been a good job done.”

The wild pursuit began in Lalor Park about 9.30am and ended in Katoomba two hours later at 11.40am, with the car sitting sideways, sandwiched between police, in the middle of the Great Western Highway.

Police allege the driver had to then be Tasered, before he could be arrested.

The car chase began after a member of the public allegedly noticed one of the men swapping number plates on the car about 8.15am in Lalor Park.

When the vehicle of interest was spotted in Lalor Park an hour later it allegedly failed to stop, sparking a pursuit that involved the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, PolAir, Raptor Squad, the Tactical Operations Unit and local police.

At 10,40am, little over an hour into the chase, the car slowed down as it encountered police on Old Windsor Rd in Winston Hills.

As it slowed a Raptor Squad officer tried to grab hold of the vehicle, with police sources saying it then “accelerated”, flinging the officer across the bonnet of another police car.

His colleagues then opened fire, shooting through the front windscreen and at the driver twice, as the car sped off.

The driver then stopped momentarily so his 21-year-old passenger could get out of the car, before continuing to lead police on a chase.

He drove west along the M7, then veered onto the M4 and the Great Western Hwy, where at 11.15am police unsuccessfully deployed road spikes at Springwood.

When the driver was confronted by traffic congestion past Katoomba he did a U-turn and went east, back down the Great Western Hwy.

Finally, at 11.40am, Tactical Operations Unit specialist police performed a high-risk vehicle stop at Katoomba, near Woodlands Road, bringing the chase to an end.

The damaged Holden Commodore had several smashed windows and had come to lie in the median strip, where the male driver was arrested.

Bullet holes could be seen in the windscreen, while the car’s side mirrors were barely hanging on.

Live Traffic NSW have confirmed the Great Western Highway is closed in both directions at Woodlands Rd due to the police operation, with drivers encouraged to use an alternative route and allow extra time.
