A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a car at knifepoint and leading police on a high-speed chase through Sydney’s west overnight.

Officers were called to Kihilla Rd in Auburn shortly before midnight following reports of a carjacking.

Police were told a driver had been approached by an unknown man who allegedly threatened them with a knife before forcing them out of their SUV and fleeing in the stolen vehicle.

The driver was not injured.

A short time later, officers spotted the stolen SUV on Boorea St in Lidcombe and attempted to stop the driver.

When the driver allegedly failed to comply, police initiated a pursuit.

The chase came to a crashing halt just after midnight when the SUV collided at the intersection of Parramatta Rd and Melton St in Auburn.

The alleged driver – a 23-year-old man – then attempted to flee on foot but was arrested nearby and taken to Auburn Police Station.

Following the end of the pursuit, two fully marked police vehicles also collided nearby.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Police have established crime scenes at multiple locations and detectives have commenced an investigation into the incident.

Investigations are continuing.
