A tumultuous marriage has led to a man allegedly being kidnapped and detained by a group of men who are associates of his wife’s family.
Kodar Faytrouni, 27, Safwan Hussein, 36, Abud Elkerdi, 36, and Ali Hamad, 33, are accused of kidnapping and assaulting the 25-year-old in Sydney’s west, and faced court today.
Just before 10am on Wednesday, the group of men are accused of forcing their way into a Guildford apartment on Guildford Rd, before allegedly assaulting and choking the 25-year-old occupant and forcing him into their BMW sedan.
Witnesses reported this to officers from the Cumberland Police Area Command, who deployed a large-scale investigation and search for the vehicle with assistance from the Robbery and Serious Crime and Raptor Squad.
It is alleged that the man was driven to another Guildford property in Constance St where the four men continued to assault and threaten him with a sword.
After several hours, police say the alleged victim was forced back into the BMW which shortly after was spotted by investigators who stopped the vehicle near Chetwynd Rd.
The 33-year-old front seat passenger allegedly fled the vehicle but was arrested momentarily after.
The other occupants of the BMW, the 40-year-old male driver and two passengers aged 27 and 36, were arrested at the scene.
A police source said it would be alleged the victim had been told to “denounce” his marriage because his in-laws did not approve of their union.
Two of the men were taken to Merrylands Police Station while the other pair were taken to Granville Police Station.
The BMW was seized for forensic examination.
Officers will allege in court that the group of men travelled from Victoria to threaten and assault the 25-year-old victim, who they believe is known to them.
At Parramatta Local Court on Thursday, Faytrouni’s lawyer applied for her client, who the court heard has mental health impairments, to be released on bail.
The court heard how the courier driver allegedly made threats to kill the complainant and how the alleged incident arose over a misunderstanding.
The prosecution opposed bail, telling the court there were concerns over Mr Faytrouni endangering the alleged victim’s safety and despite his record not being lengthy he had a history of violence.
“The offences are extremely serious,’’ prosecutor Rebekah Jung said.
The father has family in Victoria and an application for home detention would have seen him live with his sister at South Wentworthville.
The court also heard how he had an extensive history of trauma and had a head injury when he was younger that led to PTSD and he has also been diagnosed with ADHD.
He requires valium and he was finding it “difficult” in custody over the past 24 hours without access to medication.
Magistrate Kate Thompson refused bail, noting there were concerns about interfering with witnesses and an unacceptable risk to the community.
The matters for Hussein, Elkerdi, and Hamad were mentioned briefly in court where bail was not applied for and refused.
Those matters will return to court on Friday when an Arabic interpreter was requested for each man.
