A man allegedly hired to arrange the cars and load the gun used in the fatal southwest Sydney shooting of “an innocent party” has appeared in court as police continue to hunt the person who pulled the trigger in what detectives have called a “revenge killing”.
Kerin Kurtoglu, 25, was arrested in what NSW Police homicide squad commander Danny Doherty told reporters was a breakthrough in the investigation into the fatal shooting of Bol Deng, 20.
Police alleged Kurtoglu was an “important cog in the wheel”.
Deng is the younger brother of a man accused of killing Comanchero bikie boss Alen Moradian in Bondi Junction in June last year, in an incident considered one of the most brazen in Sydney’s underworld war.
Kurtoglu did not apply for bail at Bankstown Local Court on Friday, and it was formally refused.
His matter will return for a brief status mention in February.
Court documents state Kurtoglu is accused of being an accessory before the fact to Mr Deng’s alleged murder, and of participating in a criminal group involved in a murder.
He is further accused of possessing ammunition for a firearm for which he does not hold a licence or permit after police raided his Auburn address on Thursday.
Separately, Kurtoglu has been charged with making false representations to police sparking a police investigation over allegations dating back to October.
In court documents, police allege Kurtoglu falsely told police he was the victim of a car jacking, sparking a police probe.
That matter will also return to court in February.
SEARCH WARRANTS
Police were called to the scene of the Fairfield Heights shooting just after 8.30am on February 27, arriving to find Mr Deng’s body on Stella St.
Strike Force Gaul detectives, with the assistance of Raptor Squad and Bass Hill Region Enforcement Squad officers, executed two search warrants in Auburn about 6.40am on Thursday.
Detectives arrested Kurtoglu and charged him with being an accessory before the fact to murder, possessing ammunition without holding a licence, permit or authority, participating in a criminal group and failing to comply with a digital evidence access order direction.
Det Supt Doherty said police will allege he was paid large sums of money for his part in this organised crime murder and … for his role in staging the vehicles and at some stage preparing the gun for the actual shooter.’
Det Supt Doherty said Mr Deng was an “innocent party” in the “revenge killing”
“It’s a callous, vicious, violent act and this murder of Bol Deng, it’s really sad, tragic,’’ he said.
“A 20-year old with his life before him, shot down multiple times in front of his mother … school kids on their way to school, so it’s an incredibly callous, vicious, violent killing.
“It also shows that the people that are involved in these organised crime networks have complete disregard for the human dignity and public safety, and the families of anyone they target.
“Anyone could have got in the way here and could have been a victim.’’
Investigations under Strike Force Gaul continue.
