Maitland woman charged with alleged threats sent to Labor Senator Kristina Keneally

Federal police raided the 41-year-old’s home before charging her with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.

A Maitland woman has been charged over allegedly sending threats to Labor Senator Kristina Keneally via a social media messenger service.

The 41-year-old was one of two people arrested by Australian Federal Police on Tuesday following an investigation into alleged threats to Senator Keneally.

Police also raided the homes of the Maitland woman and 29-year-old man, from Harrington Park in Sydney’s west.

They are bother expected to face Central Local Court on April 13.

“It will be alleged in court that the man and woman were responsible for sending two separate threatening messages on 23 November 2021 which threatened or advocated violent acts,” the AFP said in a statement.

The woman has been charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, an offence which attracts a maximum penalty of five years’ jail.

The man has been charged with threatening to cause harm to a Commonwealth public official, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.
