A prisoner allegedly tried to kill another inmate by slashing his neck during an attack with a jail-made weapon.
Ricky McNamara, 28, allegedly unleashed a vicious attack on fellow inmate Aaron McCurley on Monday, while they were both in custody at Long Bay’s Metropolitan Special Programs Centre.
Just after midnight a fight allegedly broke out between McNamara and McCurley, which quickly escalated into a near-fatal stabbing.
Police allege McNamara stabbed McCurley in the neck, which left him with a “large laceration” about 20cm in size.
Guards broke up the fight and found two prison-made weapons that were allegedly used, while McCurley, 40, was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious condition.
“The younger man, who was uninjured, was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with attempted murder,” a police spokesman said.
The Metropolitan Special Programs Centre at Long Bay accommodates offenders of all classification, including those awaiting medical appointments with the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network.
McCurley had been charged with three offences, including procuring a child under 14 for unlawful sexual activity and use carriage service to send indecent material to a person.
He has not entered pleas to any of the charges.
He was only in custody on remand, awaiting his opportunity to make a plea.
Following the alleged stabbing, McNamara was charged and his case was mentioned in court at Waverley on Tuesday. He did not appear and was refused bail.
