CCTV footage has revealed the moments before a learner, driving at speeds more than twice the limit, crashed into a western Sydney home and startled its elderly occupant.
The video shows a white SUV flying down Nottinghill Rd in Regents Park, followed several seconds later by a police car that had detected it going 107km/h in a 50km/h zone.
It slammed into the woman’s house just seconds later, causing “a bang” that prompted the 86-year-old to race outside and find the teenage driver in handcuffs.
In a statement, NSW Police said Auburn Highway Patrol officers had turned around to follow the SUV after spotting it speeding just after 5pm on Monday.
By the time they caught up with it, they discovered the vehicle had veered off the road, smashed through a fence and crashed into the garage of the home.
Police turned around to follow the car but discovered it had veered off the road, smashed through a fence and crashed into the garage of the 86-year-old’s home.
Neither the driver or the resident was injured, but the crash caused significant damage to the garage and front corner of the property.
The driver was arrested at the scene and returned negative results for both breath and drug tests.
He was later fined a total of $4324 for three offences, including exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, driving unaccompanied as a learner and failing to display L plates.
He also received eight demerit points and a six-month licence suspension.
Speaking at her home on Tuesday morning, the 86-year-old resident, who did not want to be named, described what had occurred.
“I was just doing normal things around the house,“ she said.
“There was a bang. I heard the police just prior to the bang.
“I knew something happened. I knew it would be a car. I didn’t know it affected my place.”
The woman said she was a “bit worked up” but, apart from the inconvenience, she was thankful no one was injured.
“This could have been so much worse,” she said.
“We have a lot of people walking past Nottinghill Rd and we’re just so fortunate no one was walking past then.”
A neighbour said speeding and burnouts were common on Nottinghill Rd because it was a straight stretch.
“He’s very lucky,” the neighbour said of the learner driver.
“It’s a life lesson for him and I hope he pays attention to it. At 19, you think you’re invincible.”
