Kyle Thompson: Alleged Wellington drug boss strikes plea deal

After extensive negotiations, the alleged kingpin of a major regional NSW drug syndicate is expected to enter a plea next month, a court has heard.

Strike Force Pinnacle arrests

The alleged kingpin of a major regional NSW drug syndicate has struck a plea deal with prosecutors, a court has been told.

Wellington man Kyle Anthony Thompson was charged with a string of drug supply offences in May 2020 after police conducted dawn raids at more than 20 properties across NSW as part of a Strike Force Pinnacle investigation which dismantled the syndicate.

Police allege the syndicate oversaw the transfer of large amounts of ice, heroin and MDMA from Sydney to Wellington.

Mr Thompson, 35, was charged with offences including knowingly directing the activities of a criminal group, knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, supplying more than a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug and possessing more than three prohibited firearms.

He has not yet entered any pleas, however when Mr Thompson’s case was mentioned briefly in the Dubbo Local Court on Thursday, the Crown lawyer Jesse Friend said an agreement had been reached between prosecutors and the defence team.

“A plea has been determined between the parties,” Mr Friend told the court.

“The matter will be committed for sentence on the next date.”

Mr Friend said more time was needed before pleas could be entered, because the Crown and defence were negotiating an agreed set of facts which Mr Thompson was to be sentenced on.

Magistrate Gary Wilson adjourned Mr Thompson’s case to date in October.

Mr Thompson remains remanded in custody.
