A groom spent his wedding night in the cells after a proposal to sleep with a wedding guest descended into violence, a court heard.

Joshua Neowhouse had only been married to his new wife a matter of hours when he told her he wanted to have sex with a mutual friend.

The fallout from the sexual proposal resulted in the police being called and a drunk Neowhouse being pepper sprayed in the face.

Penrith Local Court heard Neowhouse, also known as Joshua Thomas, held a private wedding ceremony with several family members in Wallacia from 3pm on September 25.

Neowhouse had been drinking and celebrating when at around 9pm he told his new wife he wanted to have sex with a mutual friend.

The comment sparked what the court heard was a “heated verbal argument” with a drunk Neowhouse becoming highly aggressive towards everyone.

He walked outside yelling at which point a member of public called police.

When police arrived, they spotted Neowhouse outside with no shirt on.

Court documents reveal they tried to speak with him and he yelled “f*** off, f*** you” and walked back inside.

Police asked his wife if she could ask him to come outside. Police then heard yelling and banging so they moved in.

Neowhouse was standing in the hallway with clenched fists.

He looked at officers and yelled “f*** off you dog, don’t come near me I’m having a shower,” before walking into the bathroom.

Neowhouse’s mother was standing nearby and crying and officers tried asking the family why he was so angry, documents state.

At this point Neowhouse started walking back out towards police and stood right up in the face of a senior constable and yelled “f***ing come on dog, take ya mask off I’ll f***ing go ya f***ing dog.”

The court heard the officer grabbed his arm in an attempt to arrest him but Neowhouse moved back violently.

Officers tried to grab him again to arrest him and took him to the floor.

He began kicking and hitting officers and yelled “f***ing let me go you f***ing dogs, take the mask off let’s go”.

An officer then fired pepper spray in his face and he was thrown in the back of the police van.

The court heard Neowhouse was on an intensive corrections order for the same offence, of assaulting police, when he assaulted police at his wedding.

He pleaded guilty and was convicted of assaulting an officer and resisting or hindering police in relation to the wedding incident.

Magistrate Mijovich slammed Neowhouse and his behaviour for wasting police resources.

“Police are just doing their job and they have to put up with this rubbish,” he said. “I’m told there are mental health issues but I have no material before me to support that.”

Neowhouse’s lawyer said his client deserved another chance before being jailed.

“There were matters in 2020 for domestic violence and larceny and a high range drink driving,” Mr Mijovich said. “This is coming from someone who said he’s done drug and alcohol courses.

“With your history, you still decided to turn it on and drink at your own wedding.”

Magistrate Mijovich said she wasn’t happy to hear Neowhouse chose to drink on his wedding day.

He added: “Until you decide you won’t drink at all, till you realise you can’t drink at all there is no alternative to a custodial sentence.”

Neowhouse became emotional as he was handed a four month sentence, telling the court “I’m gonna miss Christmas again.”.

The newlywed asked to give his wife a hug before going into custody but was denied and escorted through the dock as he screamed “I love you”.
