John Ibrahim’s son Daniel Taylor loses defamation case against The Sunday Telegraph

Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim’s son Daniel Taylor has lost his defamation case against The Sunday Telegraph, and has been ordered to pay court costs for both sides.

Daniel Taylor, the son of Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim, this week lost his defamation case against They Sunday Telegraph.

The 31-year-old sued this newspaper in the Federal Court of Australia, claiming he was described as a mobster in a 24-page investigation into the family titled Inside the House of Ibrahim that was published in June 2019.

However, Justice Anna Katzmann dismissed Taylor’s case on Monday, and ordered him to pay court costs for both sides.

Justice Katzmann ruled that Mr Taylor was not described as a mobster.

Instead, the judge told the court “the impression” the series of stories created was that Taylor was not a mafia figure, mobster or criminal engaged in organised crime.”

“Rather, Mr Taylor comes across … as a petulant young man with a sense of entitlement, who has a complicated and at times turbulent relationship with his father, a foul mouth, a fondness for wisecracks and a predilection for making jokes in poor taste,” Justice Katzmann told the court.

The articles were based around a police investigation that saw Mr Taylor’s uncle, Michael Ibrahim, jailed for a maximum of 30 years for smuggling almost two tonnes of drugs into Australia.

Justice Katzmann told the court that it did not follow that the articles contained the imputations that Mr Taylor was a crime figure by association.
“The fact that another (or other) members of his family are or may be involved in organised crime does not mean that Mr Taylor is too,” Justice Katzmann told the court.

“And I am not persuaded that the matter complained of suggests that he is. The ordinary reasonable reader would know that you cannot choose your relatives.”
