A Sydney magistrate has issued arrest warrants for two men charged over allegedly concealing 16-year-old Jason Galleghan’s murder — after they both failed to show up to their first court date.

Rebyll Oaariki, 24, of Wooloweyah, and Thomas Pakau, 18, of Kingswood, were mentioned in Blacktown Local Court on Thursday for the first time after being recently charged with concealing a serious indictable offence – murder.

Jason was found unresponsive with head injuries after allegedly being savagely set upon by a group that included other teens at a Doonside home last August.

Police allege in court documents that Oaariki failed to give information to a NSW Police member when he knew that a murder had been committed by at least eight other people.

Officers also allege in the documents that Oaariki knew information that could have been of assistance in relation to the conviction of those eight people.

Some of those eight cannot be named because they are under 18 but included in that group are three adults charged with murder: Richard Sione, 32, Stacey Pale, 36, and Kayla Dawson, 19.

Police allege in court documents Pakau also failed to tell information to a NSW Police member while knowing murder had committed by some of those people.

Eleven people have now been charged in connection to Jason’s death and all remain before the courts.

Police prosecutors told the court that the NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had elected to take over the cases against Oaariki and Pakau, meaning their matters will likely be dealt with in a higher court.

Oaariki and Pakau are on bail but failed to appear in person for their first court date, prompting magistrate Brian van Zuylen to issue arrest warrants for them.

“Right, well I’ll just issue a warrant … an arrest warrant, that’s it,” Mr van Zuylen said when discussing Oaariki’s matter.

Jason’s mum, Rachel Galleghan, has previously said she could not believe her son is dead.

“This is still something that I can’t believe has happened, I’m still coming to terms with the fact that I will never see my precious son Jason again, and that his life was taken at the age of 16,” Ms Galleghan said.

“Jason was such a kind person with such a happy spirit; he was loving and generous and helpful to his sisters and to his family and friends.

“I was so proud of the young man that Jason was, I couldn’t have asked for more in a son. It is just so utterly devastating and heartbreaking that his future was taken away from him far too soon.”
