A man has been described in court as an “extremely unsettled person” after he was charged over the murder of his father on Thursday night.
Jaiken Fitzpatrick, 38, was charged with murder on Thursday night, after police were called to a property on Kita Rd, Berowra Heights about 4.20pm following reports of a domestic incident.
Emergency services arrived to find Jaiken’s father Kenneth with life-threatening injuries.
He was treated by paramedics but he died at the scene.
It’s understood a weapon was not used in the alleged killing, and that Kenneth suffered serious head injuries.
Jaiken’s matter was mentioned at Hornsby Local Court on Friday morning, after he spent the night in police cells.
Jaiken’s lawyer Andrew Scali told the court his client was an “extremely unsettled person” and required a mental health assessment while in custody.
“He needs an assessment for his own safety,” Mr Scali told the court.
“He’s got a history of medical and mental conditions.”
It’s understood the incident occurred at the Fitzpatrick family home while Kenneth’s wife was out at work.
Members of the Fitzpatrick family were in court on Friday, and told waiting media they were “very sad” following the incident.
Asked if they knew what happened in the house on Thursday afternoon, the family said they were unaware of the full circumstances that led to Kenneth’s death.
A nearby resident said he was in shock after hearing of the death.
George Jankowski said the man who died was “a pretty quiet guy who kept to himself”.
“It was a shock, it was unexpected, especially around here, it is a quiet place.
“Just hearing a truck going up and down the street is a big drama, so that sort of thing happening is a big shock,” he said.
Police and forensic teams remain at the Berowra Heights home today.
