‘Intoxicated’ Deputy Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon ‘swore at’ ambos: report

A secret report says Deputy Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon ‘shaped up’ to and swore at an ambulance officer who was trying to assist him after he collapsed ‘intoxicated’ onto a footpath.

Deputy Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon “shaped up” to an ambulance officer who was trying to assist him after he collapsed “intoxicated” onto a footpath, a secret report reveals.

The man tipped to become our next police commissioner allegedly told the ambo to “f … off” before turning towards him “as if he wanted to shape up and strike” him, before a police officer stepped in, according to the ambulance officer’s account of the events of February 24.

The state government has desperately fought to keep this report secret. However, Greens MLC David Shoebridge and One Nation MLC Rod Roberts successfully had the report tabled in NSW parliament.

Mr Lanyon had been in Goulburn to attend a police attestation ceremony later that week when he was found collapsed near the Big Merino.

But when ambulance and police crews arrived after responding to a call, they alleged Mr Lanyon — who was not in uniform — was argumentative and agitated.

Instead of accepting help, Mr Lanyon instead called NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dominic Morgan, who advised the crew to treat Mr Lanyon as they would any other patient.

But in trying to assist an “intoxicated” Mr Lanyon, the crews were sworn at and threatened, the report claims. Mr Lanyon was never breath-tested.

Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has never claimed Mr Lanyon had not had a drink on the night of the incident, telling a budget estimates committee Mr Lanyon had consumed alcohol.

However, Mr Fuller said the episode had been the result of “low blood pressure or low blood sugar”.

According to the report, Mr Lanyon’s blood pressure was assessed at a normal 110/70.

Greens MP David Shoebridge accused the government of a cover-up.

Mr Lanyon said he had been “unaware” he had caused “any offence” to ambulance officers.

“I have the greatest respect for all officers and the work they do,” he said.
