Matthew Brian Ramsay charged with Dover Heights stabbing

A once high-flying real estate agent was allegedly battling major personal issues when he showed up at an eastern suburbs home and plunged a knife into the chest of his best friend’s wife.

Matthew Brian Ramsay had been at the wedding of his alleged stabbing victim and her husband.

Police allege Ramsay, 46, stabbed the woman with a kitchen knife, before a wrestle ensued and she managed to pry the blade from him.

The woman's husband told media outside the home on Tuesday his wife was “doing the best she can”.

Real estate agent Matthew Ramsay has been charged over a stabbing at Dover Heights on Monday afternoon.
Real estate agent Matthew Ramsay has been charged over a stabbing at Dover Heights on Monday afternoon.

NSW Police had previously said the victim knew her alleged attacker, but husband revealed he was more than just an acquaintance.

“He was ... at our wedding … how do you think I feel?” he said.

Local residents said they had often seen Ramsay’s car at the home but senior police sources said there was no evident motive at this stage of their investigation.

Ramsay chose not to face Waverley Local Court on Tuesday over the alleged stabbing of his female friend in broad daylight on one of the most exclusive waterfront streets in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Instead he remained in the cells during the brief hearing.

Ramsay is also facing a separate, unrelated charge of shoplifting.

His defence lawyer Andrew O’Brien did not apply for bail on Ramsay’s behalf and sought an adjournment on both matters.

Mr O’Brien indicated he would seek to have Ramsay’s shoplifting charge dealt with under the mental health act when that matter returns to court on September 5.

He asked for the attempted murder charge to be adjourned to October 19 so police could serve the brief of evidence on his office.

An interim apprehended violence order put in place by NSW Police and naming Mrs Coulston as a person in need of protection will continue.

Ramsay has been charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

A group of tradies who were working on a building site four doors away ran to the aid of the woman after hearing her screams for help on Monday.

Back at work on Tuesday, the men said they were keen to meet the woman whose life they helped save.

“I kept it together in the moment and was just concentrating on her, but last night it hit me and I struggled to sleep,” Peter Haramis, who spent the morning giving a statement at Waverley Police Station, said.

“I’d hope that someone would do the same for my wife or mother.

“I’d like to see her when she’s up for it, just to check how she’s going and wish her well.”

Mr Haramis a day earlier detailed how he picked up the knife after the woman allegedly managed to pry it from Ramsay.
