Police are investigating a car fire and reports of gunshots in Sydney’s west overnight.

Officers were called to Emerson St in Wetherill Park shortly before 10.30am after locals reported hearing gunshots, followed by a vehicle engulfed in flames.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the car was completely destroyed.

Witnesses told police they saw unknown individuals fleeing the area shortly before the fire.

Fairfield City Police, with the assistance of the Dog Squad and PolAir, have been canvassing the area.

No injuries have been reported, and a crime scene has been established, with specialists examining the site.

Further details are yet to be released as the investigation continues.

The incident comes just hours after a separate shooting in Auburn, where Khoder Hamdan, 19, narrowly escaped injury after being targeted by gunmen.

Hamdan was shot at up to 10 times as he backed his Mercedes out of a home on Chisholm Rd around 3:15pm.

While he escaped unscathed, bullets hit multiple homes and his vehicle.

Shortly after the Auburn shooting, video footage captured a yellow jerry can near a burning silver Lexus sedan in the vicinity.

Police are investigating both events but it is not yet clear if they’re linked.
