A new police task force cracking down on violent crime is already operating on Sydney’s streets, with officers uncovering a stash of weapons and suspicious items in the city’s west.
Two firearms, a jerry can full of fuel, face coverings and ammunition were discovered by police in an allegedly stolen car on Junction St in Guildford shortly before 5.45pm on Tuesday.
Officers were conducting proactive patrols as part of Task Force Falcon, a newly formed squad targeting organised and violent crime, when they found the vehicle — a Mercedes — allegedly staged in the area.
A search of the car revealed a semi-automatic assault rifle, a handgun, ammunition, fuel and face coverings. No one has been arrested at this stage.
The items were seized, and a crime scene was established for forensic examination.
Task Force Falcon was launched by State Crime Command this month to investigate and suppress violent crime across the Sydney metropolitan region.
Commander of Task Force Falcon, Detective Superintendent Jason Box, said the early result highlights the task force’s proactive approach to community safety.
“The discovery of this vehicle, containing firearms and fuel, is a concerning example of the risks we’re working to prevent.
It also shows that Taskforce Falcon is already making a difference—our officers are out there, actively disrupting criminal activity,” Det Supt Box said.
“Taskforce Falcon was launched to address organised crime violence, and this early result demonstrates our commitment to being proactive and visible in the community.
We’re encouraging the public to stay alert and report anything that doesn’t seem right—particularly unfamiliar or suspicious vehicles in your street. Your information could be vital in helping us prevent harm.
“Community safety is a shared responsibility. With the public’s support, we can continue to make inroads and keep our neighbourhoods safe.”
Taskforce Falcon is the fourth major operation put together by NSW Police since 2021 and follows Strike Force Hawk in 2021, Strike Force Erebus in 2022 and Taskforce Magnus in 2023.
There had been 25 people killed in public place shootings before Sunday’s attack, many of them linked to recent tit-for-tat feuds involving organised crime networks and bikie gangs, largely over drug territory or personal feuds.
Investigations are ongoing.
