A police strike force has been set up to investigate the death of Stockton man Graham Cameron as crime scene experts continue their painstaking search for clues on how the early morning blaze began.
Specialist police returned to the Fullerton St crime scene on Tuesday to conduct a line search as forensic officers remain looking through the gutted premises.
The body of Mr Cameron, 55, was found inside his public housing unit after emergency services were called about 5am on July 26.
Fire crews spent several hours extinguishing the fire after the flames quickly spread through the roof cavity to four adjoining units.
Neighbours were evacuated with one person needing to be rescued.
Newcastle police district commander Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey confirmed on the day of the fire that Mr Cameron was not found in his bed.
A week on from the blaze, it is understood a strike force has been set up to investigate Mr Cameron’s death while a report continues to be prepared for the coroner.
The former Sydneysider had become a popular Stockton local after moving to the seaside suburb a few years ago.
Mr Cameron and his beloved fox terrier Izzy were a common sight across the suburb.
The devastating fire has also proved difficult for forensic officers, with the crumbling ruins combining with safety concerns to slow a complete search of the unit for evidence which could determine the cause of the blaze.
They continued the operation on Tuesday after the structure was deemed safe to search.
Parts of the roof and floor collapsed during the fire, with detectives now sifting through the lower layer of the unit.
A line search of Fullerton St and areas across the road, including drains, are also being searched by officers.
