Top horse trainer Gary Portelli stepped out sporting a black eye at the Cox Plate today, after he was attacked at a race meet last week.
It’s the first time the two-time Golden Slipper winning horse trainer has been seen since police allege he was assaulted by 38-year-old Fergus Dorney at Kembla Grange on October 13.
Portelli suffered injuries to his face and damage to his car following the alleged altercation with Dorney last week.
“Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and spoke with a 53-year-old man who had been assaulted, suffering facial injuries and his vehicle was damaged,” a police spokesman said.
Despite his injuries requiring hospital treatment, Portelli was in fine form on Saturday, celebrating the win of Sejardan in the Red Anchor Stakes on Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley.
Dorney was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm following the alleged incident, and slapped with an AVO, which ordered him to stay away from Mr Portelli.
He faced Port Kembla Court this week with his lawyer – where his case was adjourned for three weeks.
He is yet to enter pleas to the charges against him.
When contacted by the Saturday Telegraph, Mr Portelli declined to comment.
Mr Portelli won his second Golden Slipper in March with two-year-old Fireburn storming at Rosehill Gardens.
