Two best mates from NSW’s central west have been killed in a horrific head-on crash that also claimed the lives of a local couple.
Lochie Jacobs and Joey Urban were passengers in a ute being driven by their mate, when it collided with a couple travelling in a van on Friday night.
Emergency services rushed to the Newell Highway, about 35km south of Dubbo, following reports a Toyota HiLux and a van had crashed head-on about 9.20pm.
Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District arrived to find total carnage – the two vehicles totally destroyed and punted from the road.
Both Mr Jacobs and Mr Urban, aged 18 and 19, died at the scene, while the driver of the ute, a 23-year-old man, was rushed to hospital with leg injuries.
The man and a woman who were in the van – both aged 57 – died at the scene.
They are yet to be formally identified but are understood to be from the central west.
Tributes are flowing online for Mr Jacobs, an up-and-coming rodeo bull rider, and Mr Urban – who have been mates since childhood.
“Rest easy beautiful boys,” one friend wrote. “The world is so cruel at times! Too young.”
“Two of the best blokes, best mates together forever,” another said.
Mr Urban’s sister Maddie made a touching post to her brother on social media, saying she would “drink a few Tooheys” for him.
“The best brother a sister could ask for,” she wrote.
“I love you so incredibly much, You will be missed by so many.”
Following the collision, Rob Bevern, from Orana Mid-Western Police District said police were “committed to reduce the road toll to zero”.
“Any loss of life on the road is a terrible incident,” he said.
The crash took the state’s road toll to 248 this year, while in the past 12 months, 10793 people have been seriously injured on NSW roads.
Police confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and whether speed was a factor.
