Former deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack’s police officer son has been charged with multiple offences – including a domestic violence related assault against a woman – in Sydney.
Police said officers went to William St, Darlinghurst, after receiving a call about an alleged assault just before 1am last Saturday.
Nicholas McCormack, the Nationals politician’s 26-year-old son, was arrested and taken to Kings Cross police station.
He was then charged with three counts of common assault and one count of common assault domestic violence related.
The DV charge is against a woman, police will allege in court.
NSW Police said his employment is under review.
He is a constable and attached to a specialist command.
He was granted bail and will face Downing Central Local Court on December 13.
Court records also show police have applied to take out an apprehended violence application on behalf a woman against him.
Mr McCormack’s lawyer Paul McGirr said his client will fight the allegations in court.
“It’s a contested matter and we need to let the presumption of innocence prevail,” Mr McGirr said.
“At this stage, there’s a lot more evidence to come to light, and we need to be careful not to jump to conclusions as there is a narrative that will accompany this particular matter, hence why it’s a plea of not guilty.
“Just because someone’s charged doesn’t necessarily mean they’re guilty with an offence.”
In 2020, then Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his deputy, Mr McCormack, attended a graduation ceremony of the latest police recruits at the SCG after the usual ceremony at the Goulburn police academy was called off due to the pandemic.
Among the graduates in the crowd was Nicholas McCormack.
Mr McCormack said at the time it was “a very proud father moment” to watch his son become a police officer.
“It was a very special ceremony today at the SCG, I’m very proud,” he said.
“They’ve all done a sterling job this year under great adversity and even though COVID-19 has been such a challenge for everybody, the police have been there all the way.”
Mr Morrison, whose father was a police officer, grew emotional at the ceremony.
“My father stood where you stand decades ago, he would be very proud to look upon you today,” he said.
“You are a part of our community and you protect our community … you have joined the gold standard of policing, not just here in Australia but all around the world.”
The McCormacks are from Wagga Wagga in country NSW.
Michael McCormack edited the regional city’s newspaper, The Daily Advertiser, before going into politics.
He rose through the ranks of the Nationals before becoming deputy prime minister in 2018, first under then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and then Mr Morrison.
