Explosion sparks major fire at western Sydney service station

Exploding gas cylinders have sparked a massive blaze at a service station in western Sydney, with plans to evacuate surrounding streets as firefighters battle the flames. See the photos.

A gas explosion which sparked a major fire at a western Sydney service station saw dozens of Sydney residents evacuated from their homes last night.

A number of gas cylinders at a service station on Hamilton Rd, Fairfield exploded about 6:30pm on Wednesday, causing a large fire at the site. 

The blaze burned uncontained for over an hour as fifty firefighters and seventeen fire trucks worked to control the inferno, with an exclusion zone established seeing residents of a dozen nearby homes evacuated and local roads briefly closed.

Local police attended the scene and established a command post to coordinate the emergency response, before the fire was contained about 8pm.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said no injuries had been reported and that firefighters had managed to prevent the flames from impacting the service station itself, containing the fire to a storage area. 

“It was a good effort from firefighters considering the fuel of the fire, it was pretty much contained to the storage area, though there has been some damage to adjoining structures,” Supt Dewberry said.

The cause of the explosion is still unknown, and hazmat officials were on site until later in the evening due to concerns gas was still leaking from the cylinders.

There are no reports of injuries yet but the fire is burning “uncontained”, Supt Dewberry said.
