A fallen former Home And Away star has been charged after allegedly assaulting a Surry Hills shop worker with a hammer in a violent attack overnight.

Felix Dean, 24, played the role of “VJ” – the on-screen son of star actress Ada Nicodemou’s character Leah – on the hit Channel 7 soap between 2007 and 2014.

But police allege on Monday night, Dean walked into a tobacconist on Elizabeth Street about 11pm armed with a hammer and assaulted a male employee of the store.

The worker suffered minor head injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Police established a crime scene and officers searched the area, before locating Dean a short time later.

Dean was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with affray, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault, shoplifting, armed with intent to commit indictable offence and breach of bail.

Dean, from Redfern, was refused bail to appear at central Local Court on Tuesday.

During his seven years on the Palm Beach set of Home And Away he made a name for himself playing the role of “VJ Patterson”.

The role as a sandy-blonde beach kid saw him star alongside Australian TV soap royalty, with his on-screen parents played by Ryan Kwanten and Nicodemou.

Dean was nominated for Best Young Actor at the Inside Soap Awards in 2008 and 2009.

Tuesday night’s arrest of Dean is the latest incident to rock the long-running show in recent years and comes just several months after the death of another former star, Dieter Brummer.

Brummer, 45, who also appeared on Neighbours, was found dead at his Glenhaven home in July. Police did not treat the death as suspicious.

In 2019, actor Ryan Unwin – who played the role of Jesse McGregor, a former partner of Nicodemou’s character Leah – also died after falling at a waterfall in Byron Bay.

He appeared on the show between 1996 and 2000, and again between 2002 and 2005.
