Brothers 4 Life: 'An incredibly bloody time for Sydney'

A former member of the infamous Brothers For Life street gang and an associate of the Hamze crime family has been arrested allegedly driving under the influence of cocaine.

Omar Ajaj, who has a distinctive tattoo with the letters MEOC across his neck, was pulled over by Strike Force Raptor cops as he was driving in Guildford on Tuesday afternoon with a passenger in a Subaru Forester.

After returning an initial positive result, Ajaz was arrested and underwent a secondary swab before being released from police custody.

No charges are laid until the results of the second test are known in the next two weeks.

NSW Police established the Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad, known as MEOCS, in the early 2000s to concentrate on crime families from the region who were involved in multiple shootings and criminal activity at the time.

During the reign of the Brothers for Life, crime gang members such as Ajaj tattooed themselves with the letters MEOC in defiance of the squad declaring themselves as criminals.

They also had personalised number plates with MEOCS before they were eventually outlawed by the NSW Government.

The unit later merged with the Gang Squad to form the Criminal Groups Squad, dropping the MEOCS tag which some said was obsolete because many of the bikies were Middle Eastern in origin and crime syndicates were no longer purely ethnic based.

Many in the force believed the name change was done because of political correctness and perception the name was racist.

Brothers for Life was founded by Bassam Hamzy.

Bassam, who is behind bars serving a sentence for multiple convictions including murder, is considered to be one of the county’s most dangerous prisoners.

He will not be eligible for parole until 2035.

The same day that Ajaj was arrested officers also attached to the highway patrol unit of the Raptor Squad pulled over and tested Alan Marshall, a Comanchero and known associate of Tarek Zahed, who allegedly tested positive for cocaine.
