‘Appalling’: Several police injured in riots after alleged church stabbing

A teenager described by his lawyer as “suspect A” on the police wanted list from the Wakeley church riot was “deeply remorseful” and willingly surrendered to police, his lawyer said.

Police will allege 19-year-old Orjuwan Muthanna Nafea was the person with distinctive tattoos who hid his face while jumping on police cars after a bishop was stabbed inside the church.

Lawyer Rene Khio told the Saturday Telegraph that while police strongly opposed his client being released on bail, the magistrate had agreed the risk he posed to society could be mitigated with strict conditions.

“He Willingly handed himself in, he was going to surrender with our legal assistance,” Mr Khio said.

“The prosecution was instructed to heavily and extensively oppose bail… The magistrate accepted our submissions.”

Nafea was released from custody but ordered to remain at home, except when reporting to Fairfield every day and going to work.

He was also ordered to stay at least one kilometre away from Christ the Good Shepherd Church, the scene of the riot that broke out last Monday after the stabbing of Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel which was live streamed.

Police allege in court documents Nafea was seen to be jumping on the bonnet of a police caged truck before doing the same to another police vehicle during the riot.

Wearing a hat and covering his face with a scarf, police allege Nafea is the shirtless man in the images they released earlier this week.

He was charged with one count of rioting and two of damaging property.

Police allege Nafea was part of the crowd who launched objects at police and assaulted officers, causing them to fear for their safety.

He walked from custody at Fairfield Police Station on Friday night accompanied by his lawyer hiding his face behind a hoodie, a stack of papers and a CD. He rushed from the waiting media pack without saying a word.

He will return to court next month and is yet to enter pleas to the charges against him.

Following Nafea’s arrest police released images of six other people they say can help with their inquiries.

To date eight people have been charged over the violent scenes last week.

Police said the images they released on Friday after Nafea’s arrest were being targeted by detectives because they believe they were the most violent among the crowd.

“We are doing everything we can to identify these men and are now appealing for public assistance,” Strike Force Dribs Commander Superintendent Andrew Evans said.

“Someone in the community knows who they are.”
