Former league player's roadside meltdown

After a stellar NRL career where he earned his status as no-nonsense hard man, former Eels legend Paul Mares is now paying for his big mouth.

The 1980s Parramatta hero has found himself in trouble with police after launching a foul-mouthed tirade at a bush cop who he accused, at the side of a road, of having an affair with his ex.

A bizarre 17-minute video recorded by a Cooma senior constable shows the former premiership winner having a meltdown after being “harassed” by the man he accused of sleeping with his partner.

What started as a routine roadside stop quickly descends into comical scenes.

“You can f*****g tell me who you f*****g are, you’re f*****g name and who you represent,” he said.

From there, Mares agrees to do a roadside alcohol breath test but when the officer asks him to do a drug test he drives off, leaving the helpless copper in his smoke screaming at him to come back.

But when Mares returns he parks alongside the police wagon and refuses to move despite several warnings.

The confrontation continues and this time things get personal.

“You wanna play f*****g games Graham — you pull me up every time you see me,” Mares said.

“You f*****g listen to me you know a … called Becky? Because you’re going there.”

The men then go back and forth for several minutes about who should move their cars before Mares swabs a drug test before throwing back at the officer.

“Sorry mate you dropped that … you’re the one playing the games here Graham,” Mares is heard saying. Why are you being like this Paul?” the exasperated cop asks.

Mares has pleaded guilty to refusing to submit to an oral drug test.

Again he is asked to “not throw it at me” when given another drugs test but for a second time Mares chucks it out of his window.

“You f*****g stuck your dick in someone … I couldn’t give a f**k,” Mares starts.

“But you made your decision on that night of that thing so you can go and f**k yourself.”

Mares pleaded guilty to refusing to submit to an oral test, driving a vehicle with menace, not obeying a police direction and not keeping to the left of a road when he fronted Cooma Local Court where his lawyer Omar Juweinat tendered a redacted fact sheet on Thursday.

A charge of throwing a missile at a police officer was withdrawn.

When the drug test eventually comes back negative, the recording captures one last spray from Mares before he drives off.

“You f*****g idiot, keep pushing me buddy,” he said. “You f*****g imbecile I’ll be taking an AVO out against you c**t.”

In his playing days Mares managed three appearances in the 1982 Eels team that won the premiership.

A year later he was part of the side that won a second consecutive grand final before playing in a failed attempt at winning a third in 1984.

He retired from first grade football in 1989, after only running out six times for Eastern Suburbs, due to recurring knee injuries.

Mares will return to court later this month to be sentenced.
