The same gangland figure who acts as a “gun for hire” in Sydney’s underworld may have been involved in two of the city’s most high-profile recent shooting executions.
CCTV of a man and a white Subaru has been released by police in a renewed bid to solve the 2020 murder of Panania man and former Comanchero bikie gang associate Fares Abounader.
Mr Abounader, 39, was killed just before midnight on August 29, 2020, when emergency services raced to Wall Ave, Panania following reports of shots fired.
He was found with multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
Police investigating the incident believe the same individuals may have been involved in both Mr Abounader’s shooting and the assassination of Mejid Hamzy — a high-ranking member of the infamous Hamzy clan — on October 19, 2020.
Hamzy’s death is believed to be linked to the ongoing conflict between the warring Alameddine and Hamzy clans, however Mr Abounader’s is not believed to be linked to the feud.
As detectives continue to investigate they have launched a fresh appeal for information and released CCTV showing a vehicle and person of interest the night Mr Abounader died.
The vision shows a white Subaru driving around nearby streets moments before Mr Abounader was killed, and a man with a white hoodie walking along nearby Carew St where the Subaru was involved in a vehicle fire the following evening.
Strike Force Manifold detectives have arrested an 18-year-old man for his alleged role in the theft of the Subaru but investigations are continuing.
Criminal Groups Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Grant Taylor said detectives were also looking into links between the incident and the murder of Mejid Hamzy, the brother of Brothers 4 Life founder Bassam Hamzy, on October 19, 2020.
“That car was seen travelling on Horsley Rd before and after the murder, and investigations have since determined it was likely stored in a large unit complex on that road in the lead-up to the shooting,” he said.
“We believe those responsible are locals with an intimate knowledge of the Panania area.
Detectives are urging the community, particularly residents in the Panania area, to take a close look at the vision which may prompt fresh information.
“Police are also seeking to identify an unknown man who was wearing a white hooded-jumper and captured walking along Carew St about 9.40pm the following evening — the time the Subaru was burnt out.
“Strike Force Manifold detectives continue to work with their counterparts at Strike Force Courier who are probing the murder of Mejid Hamzy and working off the theory the two incidents may be linked.”
It is understood the intimate planning of the shootings of Mr Abounader and Mejid Hamzy have led police to believe the people involved were residents of the Panania area.
Det Supt Taylor said: “I urge anyone with information regarding Mr Abounader’s death to contact police – as any new leads may help resolve two brutal acts of violence that the community should not and will not tolerate.”
