A dead scuba diver found near a $20 million cocaine haul attached to a cargo ship in Newcastle has been identified as Brazilian national Bruno Borges.

The body of the 31-year-old, who was a professional diver, was found near multiple blocks of cocaine that had a collective weight of about 50kg at the Port of Newcastle on May 9.

Police had said the cocaine was hidden in the ship’s sea chest, which is part of a vessel that sucks water inside to be used for cooling.

The Embassy of Brazil in Canberra reportedly confirmed it had been in contact with Borges’s family and also with the Consulate General in Sydney about his death.

Paulo Marugi, a friend of Borge’s, posted on social media that he had a big heart.

“Go in peace my boy,” Mr Marugi wrote.

The ship, called the Areti Gr Majuro, had docked in Newcastle on May 8 after leaving Argentina more than a month earlier.

Police are still searching for two other people in connection with the haul.
