Disgraced ex-MP Craig Thomson has been charged with sending harassing emails and texts to his ex-wife during their divorce.

Former Labor MP Craig Thomson arrested over alleged fraud

Disgraced former federal MP Craig Thomson has been charged with allegedly sending harassing emails and text messages to his ex-wife as they go through a divorce.

Thomson, 57, was on Friday taken to Gosford Police Station and charged over the messages he is alleged to have sent to his wife Zoe Thomson.

Police also took out an apprehended violence order (AVO) against him for the protection of Ms Thomson.

In a statement, NSW Police confirmed they had laid charges against the father-of-three after launching an investigation when Ms Thomson reported allegedly receiving “threats from a man known to her”.

“Earlier this month, detectives attached to Brisbane Water Police District commenced an investigation following reports a 38-year-old woman had received several email threats from a man known to her,” the statement read.

“About midday on Friday (10 December 2021), detectives attended a home at Terrigal and arrested a 57-year-old man.

“He was taken to Gosford Police Station and charged with use carriage service to menace/harass/offend.

“The man was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Gosford Local Court on Tuesday.”

The latest matter to land Thomson before the courts comes just a month after another AVO was taken out between him and his now ex-wife.

After failing to appear to defend the AVO at Gosford Local in early November it was granted in his absence for a period of two years.

Thomson is also facing charges of being the “primary facilitator of a multimillion-dollar migration fraud”.

He is facing 30 charges including 20 counts of providing false documents and false or misleading information relating to non-citizens, five counts of receiving a benefit in return for a sponsorship, two counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception and two counts of dealing with the proceeds of crime.

The Australian Federal Police led the investigation and allege Thomson pocketed more than $2 million as a result of the syndicate.

In June he and his ex-wife sold their lavish home at Wamberal on the Central Coast for $3.35 million. Only three years earlier they had bought it for $2.15 million.

Thomson left politics and returned to a career as a lawyer after failing to win back his seat of Dobell at the 2013 election.

He had won the seat as a Labor candidate in 2007 and remained aligned with the party until 2012, when he moved to the crossbench as an independent amid the union credit card scandal that almost saw him jailed.

Thomson was eventually convicted of theft over the use of his union credit card on everything from prostitutes to funding his 2007 electoral campaign, and was fined $25,000.
