Chris Dawson’s twin brother had just one thing to say outside court: “Get out of her way”.
An emotional Paul Dawson, accompanied by his wife Marilyn and older brother Peter, clashed with the media as the trio made their way from the Supreme Court towards Hyde Park.
Chaotic scenes unfolded when Paul’s wife became trapped by journalists and camera crews, forcing him to yell out before appearing to push a cameraman.
“Get out of her way,” an angry Paul Dawson could be heard saying.
A police officer following behind the group was forced to quickly intervene.
“That’s my wife in there,” Paul told the officer.
The woman, who was visibly distressed and sobbing loudly, was helped out by police before Paul stood still in the park hugging her.
The emotionally charged scenes were a stark contrast to the way Lynette Dawson’s dignified family handled the media attention following Justice Ian Harrison’s five-hour judgment.
Another man, who appeared to be with the Dawson brothers, screamed at the media to get out of the way before physically pushing at a camera crew.
The same man yelled at a television journalist “you’ve got the wrong brother” when she asked mistakenly asked Paul how he felt about spending his first night in jail.
“That’s not Chris, that’s Paul. You’ve got the wrong brother,” the man could be heard saying.
Dawson and Paul are identical twin brothers who both played rugby league for the Newtown Jets, and both worked as PE teachers.
Paul shook his finger at the journalist before walking off.
The two brothers have always maintained Dawson’s innocence and have supported him in court.
NSW Police on Tuesday night said no charges had been laid following the scuffle.
Dawson was driven out of the court complex in a Corrective Services van just before 5pm and expected to be taken to Silverwater where he would be put in a holding cell with other handcuffed inmates.
He would then be ordered to undress and put on prison greens.
He will join the likes of former NSW Labor Minister Eddie Obeid, who is behind bars for conspiring over a coal licence for his family farm, while Kathleen Folbigg is next door in the women’s prison serving a sentence for murdering her three children.
