Multiple cars have been damaged after a large tree fell on a busy road in Sydney’s eastern suburbs overnight with the State Emergency Service responding to more than 40 incidents in the city in the past 24 hours.
An SES spokesman said “quite a large tree” had fallen on Ocean Ave in Double Bay in the early hours of Tuesday morning with the incident referred to Woollahra Council.
Local resident Sarah Leven told The Daily Telegraph she believes the tree may have “toppled over” about midnight, however, she was woken up by what sounded like “every machine in Australia trying to clean it up”.
“Everyone was out there in their pyjamas wondering when it was going to end,” Ms Leven said.
She added the Ocean Ave was a popular parking street for many residents and it was “luck that my car wasn’t taken out” as well.
A Woollahra Council spokeswoman said the council had removed a Candle Nut tree with the assistance of SES which had fallen on at least three cars.
The council is investigating the “cause of the fallen tree”.
As the heat subsided overnight, going from soaring temperatures close to 40C on Monday in some parts of Sydney, the rainfall quickly followed with the SES receiving 189 calls across the state and responding to 86 incidents.
The spokesman said the main focus was in the metro areas with 43 incidents in the past 24 hours, ranging from fallen trees on residential properties or roads to leaking roofs.
Northern NSW was the second busiest area in the state with the SES responding to 15 incidents.
