Bourke: Andrew Charles Smith charged with assaulting Mavis Stanley before her death
A Bourke man has been charged with the alleged serious assault of a woman who was found dead and naked on the side of the road in the state’s west.

A man has been charged with the alleged serious assault of a woman who was found dead and naked on the side of the road in the state’s west.
Police will allege in court Andrew Charles Smith, 49, seriously assaulted mother-of-two Mavis Stanley before her body was discovered on Parkdale Rd in Bourke on Tuesday, October 29.
It comes after Smith was charged with wounding a person with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm on Wednesday.
The fresh charge is the latest to be brought against Smith, who faced Bourke Local Court on Thursday.
The court also dealt with a stalk and intimidate charge and an apprehended violence order laid against Smith for an unrelated incident.
Court documents state Smith allegedly threatened a man with a knife two days before Ms Stanley’s death on Sunday, October 27.
Smith was charged with two more stalk and intimidate charges and a destroying property charge on Monday.
Police allege Smith also threatened a 16-year-old boy and a 56-year-old man on the same day on Sunday, October 27.
In court on Thursday, Smith fronted court via AVL dressed in prison greens from behind bars.
The first stalk and intimidate charge and AVO were adjourned after the prosecution and defence requested time to serve briefs.
Smith was refused bail and remains on remand in custody.
He gave a thumbs up and blew kisses to his loved ones seated in the public gallery and asked them to “send some money in” before thanking the magistrate and saying goodbye to his family.
Investigations into Ms Stanley’s death continue under Strike Force Akitio remain ongoing.
