A man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in a Wentworthville toilet block last February has appeared in court for his arraignment.

Police allege the 72-year-old touched the child in the block opposite the train station at The Kingsway on February 15 about 1.20pm, prompting the boy to chase him through an arcade in the same street, shout at him and hit him with a book.

Mr Tagnipez allegedly then crossed the road before bystanders thwarted his attempt to catch a taxi, detaining him before police arrived.

He was charged with intentionally sexually touching a child between 10 and 16 years and taking a person intending to commit a serious indictable offence.

In May, he was granted bail after three months in custody.

Mr Tagnipez appeared at Parramatta District Court on Friday, when his step daughter supported him inside the courtroom.

The court heard Mr Tagnipez is cognitively impaired and his solicitor successfully adjusted his bail conditions so he is no longer required to report to police each week.

The matter will return to court on April 11, when a Tagalog interpreter was requested. His bail was continued.
